What to watch for in a forehand video

• The unit turn. Good forehands start with the shoulders turning early, before the ball bounces. Watch when the player turns, not just how they swing.
• The grip. Most modern forehands use an eastern or semi-western grip. Note the grip in the lesson before you copy the swing, because the swing path depends on it.
• The racket drop. Slow the video down just before the swing. The racket head drops below the ball and then travels up through it, which is where topspin comes from.
• The contact point. Pause at contact. The ball is hit in front of the body and to the side, not next to the hip.
• The finish. Look at where the racket ends up: over the opposite shoulder or wrapped around the body. A full finish usually means the player did not slow the racket down before contact.

How to practice with these videos

1. Pick one lesson and take one cue from it, for example "turn the shoulders before the bounce".
2. Rally crosscourt with a partner for ten minutes with only that cue in mind.
